The 2015 Yukon Quest Dog Race is Pawsworthy Programming
February 5th, 2015 by Taylor Malowney
There are some insanely awesome dogs out there, sled dogs near the top of the list. These furry, sled-pulling beasts are known for their stamina, energy, amazing fur, and piercing eyes.
The 2015 Yukon Quest Dog Race features the creme de la creme of the dog sledding world. The contest is 1,000 miles, stretching from Fairbanks, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon in Canada.
Yukon Quest’s trail is as impressive and awe-inspiring as its name. Pups must pass over and through several mountain ranges; four peaks are over 3,000 feet, including the ominously named King Solomon’s Dome – 4,002 feet.
Yukon QuestIf all this sounds intimidating and terrifying to you, the dogs who compete love it. Mushers and their kennels – as their groups of sled dogs are called – come from the United States, Canada, the UK, and even France, Norway and Sweden. There are 26 mushers competing in the 2015 Yukon Quest; less than half are rookies.
These are some hardcore canines – some are sponsored and all have carefully-curated bloodlines. Canadian rookie Tamra Reynolds has 45 dogs in her kennel, named Annie’s Lake Kennel after her beloved lead dog. Sled dogs aren’t just your stereotypical white-and-grey Huskies; they come in all shapes, sizes and fur types and some look more Greyhound than Husky.
The 2015 Yukon Quest Dog Race starts this Saturday, February 7. Keep up with the pack and their mushers on Yukon Quest’s Facebook page, Twitter or YouTube channel. And warning – don’t try this at home, pet parents.
